Veg Box
Local, organic vegetable delivery in County Durham
The veg box scheme has been supplying the local community with seasonal, chemical-free vegetables and fruit for over 20 years using organic growing methods. Customers can choose from different sized boxes packed with fresh produce harvested from Abundant Earth's 1-acre garden.
As Garden Manager, Lauren plans and maintains the vegetable crops for the year with the help of local volunteers. She chooses what to grow based on what thrives well, customer preferences, and new varieties she wants to experiment with. Lauren feels strongly that small-scale local farms like Abundant Earth can be part of the solution to larger food system issues through organic practices that nourish the soil and ecosystem.
Wilf oversees the packing of the veg bags, customer accounts and communications, and coordinates the weekly delivery of organic produce to pickup points around Durham City. If you’d like to order a weekly veg bag, fill in the form below and Wilf will get in touch with you!
The veg box scheme aligns with Abundant Earth's mission to provide low-impact, organic produce while supporting a local food model. In a typical week, Lauren and Wilf harvest and pack enough to supply 60 households with fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruit.
What veg will I get in my bag?
The produce in the bags is seasonal, and varies as the UK harvest changes throughout the year. A typical bag would be made up of Potatoes, Onions/Garlic/leek & carrots as staples year round.
In the winter additionally you might get: cabbage, kale/stir fry/chard, parsnip/beetroot, mushrooms, celery, celeriac, squash, swede.
Then in the summer it might be: mixed salad, cucumber, tomato, courgette, french/runner beans/peas, chard/kale/tree cabbage/stir fry, turnip.
Register your interest in a delicious weekly veg bag and we’ll be in touch…
The Garden
An organic market garden built on the principles of Permaculture
The Abundant earth Veg Box Scheme offers the option of low impact, organic vegetables to the local people of Durham. The organic methods of growing mean healthier, cleaner vegetables and in turn this has a positive impact on the soil and wider ecosystem.
We grow a combination of what we know grows well, what we and our customers like to eat and cook with and what excites us. We often experiment with different varieties of the staple plants we grow (like tomatoes, squashes, leafy greens etc).
Volunteer
Join our team of Wednesday & Thursday Garden Volunteers
Spend time outside moving your body, touching the soil, breathing fresh air and listening to the birdsong while meeting other interesting people in your local community that have a similar desire to grow food and be in nature.
If you have a keen interest in growing food organically, then there is lot’s of learning and enjoyment to be had at Abundant Earth. There are jobs of all kinds of intensities to suit different bodies & abilities. Children are also welcome to come with their parents/guardians.
Tasks and Learning on a typical day…
Someone who volunteers regularly would learn all about the life cycle of different plants and their needs from seed to harvesting. Additionally, how to take care of the plants and soil using organic, low impact methods, our composting system and seed saving, herb use/harvesting/drying and much more.
As a volunteer, you would be contributing to an alternative food growing movement in the Durham area. Small scale, local, organic, hand grown & harvested. Peaceful anarchy against the way food is generally grown that damages our bodies, soil, environment & ecosystem.
Since the garden work changes in intensity throughout the seasons as does the amount of volunteer days per week. Wednesday is a year round volunteer day (between 10-4). Then as the season gets busier we add in Thursdays from about May-September… in the height of it all there are other days added too.
Lunch - a potluck buffet with contributions from everyone (OR bring your own lunch if that’s more appropriate for you) and a cuppa. Help is always appreciated for setting out and clearing away lunch stuff + one person to do the dishes.
